40hr HAZWOPER -
Hazardous Waste Worker

 General site workers (such as equipment operators, general laborers and supervisory personnel) engaged in hazardous substance removal or other activities which expose or potentially expose workers to hazardous substances and health hazards shall receive a minimum of 40 hours of instruction off the site, and a minimum of three days actual field experience under the direct supervision of a trained experienced supervisor.

  • Who Needs Training: Any persons actively working with hazardous substance removal, or that are involved in activities that pose risk of exposure to hazardous substances

  • Timing: Training shall be based on the duties and function to be performed by each responder of an emergency response organization. The skill and knowledge levels required for all new responders, those hired after the effective date of this standard, shall be conveyed to them through training before they are permitted to take part in actual emergency operations on an incident

  • In addition to the in-class training, students must accomplish an out-of-class study using the "Occupational Safety and Health (OSHA) Guidance Manual for Hazardous Waste Site Activities" and Homework booklet.

  • Note* OSHA mandates (29 CFR 1910.120:(e)(3)(i) )that in addition to the 40 hours of classroom training, workers must receive an additional 3 days of supervised field experience.

Minimum / Maximum Class Size

Minimum of five students required, maximum is dependent on training facility limitations.

Class Duration

40 hours (delivered over 4 - 8 hour days, and homework assignment), maybe shortened to 3 - 8hr days if equivalent training can be evidenced.

Class Cost

$400 per student* In-Person Training

$350per student, delivered as computer-based training

* Additional fees such as booking (If HSTC needs to book a space for the training event), or mileage may apply. This will be discussed during the booking process.
